When Saddam Hussein was arraigned today at Camp Victory, he reportedly said: “You know that this is all a theater by Bush, the criminal, to help him with his campaign”.
Has he been listening to CNN too?

(This is Linds again, btw. I have to comment anonymously. ;-))
Bush isn't the real criminal. At least, he is criminal but certainly no more so than Saddam.
However, what little I've read about the trial seems to indicate it *is* a theater. I mean, when was the last time you saw cameras in a court room? The highest court in the nation, the Supreme Court, doesn't allow cameras in the court room...which is why you only ever see sketches of cases being tried, and never actual photographs. So why were cameras allowed in this court room?
Because, Pieter, the whole Saddam capture has been so highly publicized, along with the whole War on Terror, that it would be an insult to everyone to keep the trial proceedings a secret.
The interest in his capture is second only to what the interest will be in the capture and trial of Bin Laden.
The whole point of courtroom sketches is to prevent trials from becoming circuses while still allowing the public some glimpse of what's going on in the courtroom.
This site says: "Where still and video cameras were forbidden, the courtroom artist was the sole source of images from some of history's most famous and infamous trials."
Restricting cameras from the court room is not an insult to anyone because 1) it's traditionally done and 2) there's a big difference between restricting cameras and keeping the trial secret. Transcripts of trials are not prohibited, nor are hand-drawn sketches.
Regardless of tradition or not, Pieter, the whole thing wasn't a "theater for Bush". The focus was Saddam and his arraignment for war crimes, which had nothing to do with Bush and his election campaign.
